What is a Hillsborough County Code Compliance Surety Bond?

The Hillsborough County Code Compliance Surety Bond is required of non-certified Florida contractors working in Hillsborough County.  The bond must be obtained by a construction company or individual, resident or non-resident of the county, who intends to perform contract or subcontract in the City of Tampa, Temple Terrace, Plant City, and/or Hillsborough County under any of the following regulated contractor classifications:

  • Electrical
  • Irrigation
  • Plumbing
  • Natural Gas or Liquid Petroleum
  • Mechanical

The code compliance bond’s purpose is to protect the citizens of the Hillsborough County from harm caused by a contractor’s failure to follow or meet the construction codes set forth by the county.  A contractor who has performed work in the county is responsible for making repairs to any non-compliant work for up to one year after it has been performed.  When non-conforming work is discovered by the inspector, the performing contractor must respond within 48 hours of being notified and satisfy the inspector’s requests.  However, if the contractor is non-responsive, the surety company may provide up to $5,000 of relief to the harmed party to assist in bringing the repairs up to code.
